PULL Buffalo

ABOUT

About

People United for Sustainable Housing, Inc (PUSH Buffalo), based in the city of Buffalo’s West Side, is an organization that was founded on tackling issues of housing, environmental racism, and jobs. PUSH, like many other non-profits, takes in financial resources from foundations, the city, the state, and the federal government on behalf of the community, mobilizes the language of social movements, steals the labor of passionate freedom fighters, and claims that it is working towards change – when in reality it impedes it. It is an organization that is nationally known for its organizing work, but when put under criticism, it works to safeguard its image and reputation rather than doing the necessary work to improve. This website seeks to be a source of truth in a narrative that has continually been silenced.

PULL Buffalo is a site dedicated to exposing the toxic work environment inside PUSH Buffalo and the harms that the organization has caused to the surrounding community. The toxic work environment and incompetence at PUSH is a microcosm of the labor and human rights issues that exist within the non-profit industrial complex. We want accountability for the people in charge (and formally in charge). We want them to stop gaslighting current and former workers and community members, denying our experiences as individuals, and denying the harm they have caused to so many people, places, and organizations. We want to center the community members who have been harmed — the people who can’t afford to live on the west side anymore, the people who were promised green jobs and weatherization services that didn’t exist, and the people on the housing waiting list that never ends.

We want to expose the toxic workplace at PUSH through a worker justice/labor lens, and understand that for People of Color and other marginalized identities, this is all too common at many other nonprofits (in Buffalo and beyond). We are paying attention to other nonprofit workers who are organizing for better working conditions at their workplace. We want to show more examples of workers standing up against workplace toxicity and providing resources on how to support labor organizing in the nonprofit sector. We also want to expose the lies that PUSH has been telling everyone about their grassroots sustainability (false) solutions, so that other organizations, policymakers, and celebrities stop using PUSH as an example of how to solve climate change and other social inequalities. It’s dangerous and distracting to pretend like they have the credibility to fight for social justice when they don’t. It’s doubly dangerous and distracting for them to pretend like they have the answers to a time sensitive, existential problem like climate change when they really don’t.
